Bruce Charles Heezen (
April 11,
1924 –
June 21,
1977) was an American geologist. He is most famous as being the leader of a team from
Columbia University which mapped the
Mid-Atlantic Ridge during the
1950s.
He was born in
Vinton, Iowa, and in
1947 received his B.A. from
Iowa State University; in
1952 he received his M.A. from Columbia University, and in 1957 his Ph.D.
The Oceanographic Survey Ship
USNS Bruce C. Heezen was christened in honor of him in 1999.
